Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition [X360]

Minecraft sells 9.2 million

"Mojang estimates total sales of open-world creation game hit 9.2 million across PC, Xbox 360, iOS, and Android versions."

Minecraft has struck gold, millions of times over. Developer Mojang revealed today on Twitter that total sales of the open-world creation game across all platforms are estimated to be close to 9.2 million.

Minecraft has dug out considerable success.

Minecraft has dug out considerable success.

Creator Markus Persson said via Twitter that sales of the PC version of Minecraft alone stand at 6 million. Minecraft is available on a range of platforms outside of the computer, including iOS and Android devices, where the game has sold 700,000 copies as of January.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition sold 400,000 copies during its first day, recouping development costs in just 60 minutes. It went on to sell 1 million copies in five days, on its way to becoming the fastest-selling Xbox Live title in history. During the week of May 14, Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition tallied more unique users than Activision's shooter juggernaut Call of Duty: Black Ops on Xbox Live.

Outside of games, Minecraft has expanded in areas few other titles ever have. A two-day Minecraft convention dubbed Minecon hit Las Vegas in November, and an official Lego Minecraft set is due out this summer.

Wow!!! That's incredible. I read an interview with the developer about this game and getting it to Xbox. The world size was an issue. Luckily they had a full 512 meg of unified RAM to use and weren't restrained to the 256 of video ram found on the over priced internet ready blu ray player. Probably never see this game on the over priced internet ready blu ray player because of that RAM constraint.

Pfft, that seems small, when you consider Mario Kart Wii sold like 30 million or so, on the Wii alone. And the New Super Mario bros games sold like 25 million+ each on the DS and Wii.

Shtinky minecraft is an indie developer and nintendo is the biggest developer. almost 10mill sold for an indie game is an achievement in its own right.

mathias12314 Since we're not arguing the cost of the game, but sales numbers alone, then the same could already be said about Angry Birds. And It's not really a surprise Minecraft sold well; it's been dominating the social network scene, on sites like YouTube, etc,  for the last year. Plus, it's a very accessible game, which can be played even on fairly low-spec PC's.

Shtinky i dont know what you were thinking when you thought i was talking about cost. i was talking about about numbers. rovio has been making game since 2003. minecraft was orginally made by one person, angry birds was made by a team of 18 people.

mathias12314 Minecraft's development team had expanded beyond 1 person, before the game went retail. Notch wasn't making the 360 on his own, now was he? If the 360 version constitutes even a million to the overall 9 it's sold, then it's equally worth taking into consideration.

Shtinky Considering Max Payne is estimated to sell 4 million with a large industry budget and starting funds. This is a huge accomplishment from an indie developer i.e. the guy next door who worked in his basement with a couple $1 banquet meals to survive. Just kidding about the last part but it could be true.

Shtinky Also thats Mario probably the biggest selling franchise in history by Nintendo with tons of experienced talent let alone brand name.

Superman_legend You don't need a big budget to make a top selling game in this industry, everyone knows that. I'm more impressed by how games like Brain Age can sell around 20 million on the DS -- a proprietary hardware -- and manage to expand the gaming populous and appeal to older players at the same time. In my opinion, that's more of a feat than what Minecraft has achieved.

Hamza141 And we all know what that means! If there were no piracy Minecraft would have sold 59.2+ million. Amazing.

I don't understand why it's so difficult to bring the other ports up to parity with the PC version.

360 version has extremely limited world sizes

Android version has same tiny worlds, and almost none of the complex features that make the PC version fun, "Survival" mode adds almost nothing that isn't in "Creative".

Minecraft isn't a technically demanding game, it shouldn't be hard for other devices to handle something close to the PC version.
