Perfect Example of a Arcade Game

Summary

Zombie Apocalypse is a game which was developed by Konami for download on the Playstation 3/ Xbox 360. It supports up to 4 player co-op either through Live/PSN or Local Play. It is a classic style shooter with simple button layouts and a top down style camera angle.

The main goal of the story is to stay alive till Day 55 or better put Level 55. You fire your gun with the right analog stick and move with the left which makes for some very easy controls even if your fingers do get numb after a while. You have a default Assault Rifle that you start out with on every level which has infinite ammo plus you have a chainsaw to use against the relentless zombies. (L2 Performs a Chainsaw Execution which takes longer but adds to x3 to your score multiplayer while R2 pulls out your chainsaw for basic attacks) You will also start out each round with one Teddy Bear Bomb which is a teddy bear with a C4 charge in it. When you throw the Teddy Bomb most zombies immediately stop chasing you and herd around it, it blows up like 5 to 7 seconds after you throw it killing everything around it. (R1 or L1 will throw the Teddy Bomb) In most levels weapons will randomly spawn for you to pick up and use till their ammo gets depleted. There are 11 weapons on the game which you will be able to pick up in later levels to use. All together there are 7 environments to play on with each having their own unique feel and "Hazards" to use against the zombie menace.

Now lets get to the gritty stuff which is the zombies themselves. There are 8 types of Zombies if my memory is correct. Each has their own type of movement and attacks to contend with. Some will even have dynamite and try to blow themselves up next to you to kill you (they are accurately named Kamikaze Zombies) The zombies are dumb in their behavior but they have numbers and speed (these are not your average run of the mill slow zombies) on their side. The trick is to figure out a motion to keep them herded up and following you around while you shoot and kill massive amounts of them. On Day 27 you will start to encounter "Radioactive Zombies" which look the same as regular zombies but glow green and are harder to kill. The zombies keep spawning till you have got to the end of the round. Not sure how the round is determined to be over but you will know when fewer and fewer zombies are spawning.

The game starts out with you choosing a character to play as. There are 4 characters to choose from with 1 Woman and 3 Men. It doesn't matter which you choose since the storyline/lack of storyline stays the same no matter what. When you start out on Day 1 the first thing that happens is a "survivor" comes out. To save a survivor run up to them till a red flare appears on the ground then hold off the zombie waves till the helicopter comes to rescue them. If you do rescue a survivor you will net a cool 250,000 points plus they will drop a Teddy Bear Bomb. If you already have a Teddy Bomb in your inventory you will net a extra 100,000 points for picking up the extra. If you happen to let your survivor get killed she will become a zombie herself, if you allow her to grab you it will be a instant death.

Now that you have a basic rundown of this game lets look at it some good spots. The developers have done a good job of creating a fast to learn fun shooter. There is a lot of blood and gore in the game which is exactly what you need for a zombie game. The animations when you use level hazards on zombies is pretty nice. They have made unlockable modes for the game for doing certain tasks which adds some replay value to it. The game itself supports up to 4 player co-op either through Live/PSN or through local play. This enables you to have some fun matches with your friends.

Some bad points of this game are: The game seems to drag on a lot after about day 30 when you have played on every map a couple times. Some higher levels seemed designed only for multiplayer and seem almost impossible on single player.

Overall this game is worth a buy in my opinion since it gives you exactly what a Arcade game is supposed to which is fast fun. The game seems a lot better also if you play with a friend instead of single player like I did. I have uploaded some videos of this game here on Gamespot if you want to view more.

PS. Sorry for how this review skips all around but its kind of how my mind is right now in my life

Developers/Publishers take note. Gamers have not forgotten about 4 player offline play. THANKYOU ZOMBIE APOCALPSYE!!!

Summary

Ok, I love zombies. Who doesn't. Take a classic over the top view like a lot of arcade games. Throw in a basic zombie universe back drop for arenas with different types of zombies ala Left 4 Dead. Then add basic controls and gameplay. So far, you are probably asking why I should buy this game right? I mean, if it is all basic, then why do I need it? This game becomes valuable due to on and most importantly OFFLINE multiplayer. Thats what lifts this game above most of the arcade competition. Its a blast hanging out with your friends and destroying zombies.

Hopefully this game does very well so developers and publishers will finally realize they are actually LOSING money on no 4 player offline games. All along they have thought they are gaining money from halting 4 player offline games. One of my friends (who would have never even laid eyes on this game if I did not bring it over on my hard drive) bought this game online after a bunch of use eliminated zombies for a good 5 or 6 hours.

Might be worthwhile, if there weren't much better options out there.

One stick moves the character. One stick gives direction of fire. There are powerups. There's some variety in enemies. And that's your lot.

And it isn't bad. Unfortunately, the gameplay's uninspiring, and there's no charm or drama or fear or humour. The best you can say is that the graphics are quite nice.

Unfortunately, this is the same basic gameplay as Geometry Wars, only not nearly as good. GW gives you absolute seat-of-the-pants action, with finely balanced gameplay and a soundtrack that sucks you right in. Zombie Apocalypse has none of these virtues.

All this has, that GW doesn't is Zombies. And if you want some light-hearted zombie action, go to Indie Games and download "I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!!" - which is also a zombie-themed dual-stick shooter, but is also light hearted to the point of being hilarious, and only costs 80 points.

Seriously, for gameplay, go for Geometry Wars. For zombie fun go for I MAED A GAM3....

Summary

I have mixed feelings about this particular game....

On one hand it offers a great multiplayer experience with a group of friends with easy controls and rather well rendered graphics. Yes, there is no storyline but there really doesn't need to be. Yes, there seems to be demon spawning babies, kamikaze & shotgun wielding zombies which are seldom seen in zombie shenanaganry...but it does add to the intensity of surviving, because otherwise the game would have more of the same boring slow zombies...with little challenge. The scoring system is well implemented & hazard kills (using the environment) are fun to use and watch. As well as the weapons within the game are well proportioned (except Molotov's..I hate those things).

On the other hand though, there are a few things that turn me away from playing this game over other great titles. Some of which are: while playing multiplayer the game inevitably will lag causing faulty deaths and frustration. Also, the game really isn't truly meant to be play single player in the fact that all but 2 or 3 zombie types tend to kill you in a single blow/squish/boom of some sort. This is aggravating due to the fact that if you have a partner they can save you most of the time, but alone.....your screwed dude!! Another point that didn't bother me at first, but eventually got to me was the maps and music of the game is overly recycled. There is one track that seems to play through the entire game and a handful of levels that..over time..begin to lose their glamour.

The deal breaker for me is the price and the fact that it is an arcade game. For 800 Microsoft points this is a fun no brainer shoot 'em up style game that WITH FRIENDS can be a great game. Just be wary that it is not perfect and there are moments of pure frustration.

if your looking for an amazing applacation for your iphone, need for speed under cover is for you.its much better then the one on ps3 allthough the part where you have to escape the copps is not on the iphone version witch makes the other ones fun. it has great controlls, an intresting story but i can take a long time to load, allthough not very long.the races are exiting and fun,the controlls can make the game mutch more fun but the races can,but there still very fun, they can be fustrating.

the controlls are like your driving an acctual car.you move the iphone left and right trying to take over the other people and avoid the cars that arent street racing.the races are acctualy so fun you just wont go and explore the city, well i dont.

the difficulty is acctualy quite hard, sometimes you dont really know where to go in the races and bashing in to cars makes you do a flip and pray you dont get hit by a car/van again.

i know this isnt a very good review but its the best i can do.
